Meet Bhavika Sharma, A Full Time UI/UX Designer And Leisure Time Biker

With sparkle and a sense of wonder in her eyes, Bhavika Sharma is an unstoppable force. She is multi-talented, curious, and always looking for ways to upskill herself. Her work discipline and professional ethics have already made her a very dependable colleague at Skuad. In her free time, she is busy dreaming of riding a bike across the Ladakh valley. Here's a sneak peek into the world of our phenomenally talented UI/UX designer, Bhavika.

How are you finding your role at Skuad different from the previous organization?

After many years away from home, I was keen to move back to my hometown, Gurgaon, and spend quality time with my family. Previously, I was working as a UI/UX designer when I stumbled upon the opportunity to work at Skuad through LinkedIn. I liked my interview process and decided to take the role. I have been working on designing mobile apps, web applications, and graphic designs for quite some time now. But I don’t want to stop at that. I want to ace animation. Basically, I love discovering new technologies related to my work. The decision to work at Skuad was an easy one since I was offered the opportunity to learn more about animation.

What has been the most memorable moment in your career so far, and what's next for you?

My teammates from the previous organization threw me a grand farewell. When I left the company, we all went to a restaurant, chatted, and shared vivid memories. It was an amazing night! It was so precious; I was deeply moved by their efforts. We cried a lot too! I am still in touch with some of them.

Marriage is definitely on the cards in the next 2-3 years. I am currently trying to figure out how to balance my passion, career, and personal life post marriage.

What has been your experience with remote work? And how can we get better at it as a company?

It’s the first time I'm working remotely. In my previous organization, I had a good work set up that I really miss. I've invested in furniture and other things needed to recreate a similar work environment at home. But overall, I think there are more benefits of working remotely, such as saving travel time and using that time to work, especially when the workload is too much. In an office setup, we can’t stay beyond a certain hour, especially as women.

To answer the second part of this question, I think Skuad is already acing remote culture! I think my colleagues are very good at managing their time. I have so much to learn from them.

What motivates you to come to work every day?

Every day I look forward to connecting with my team members and working towards a collective goal. The people here are very friendly. I really enjoy working with my team in particular. They understand my problems and give solutions. Even if I call them repeatedly, they are always ready to extend help. As a professional, I love to learn new things and try to add as much to my knowledge bank as possible. Even something as small as figuring out a new website resource matters to me, as it adds to my skills as a UI/UX designer. Basically, I love coming to work and learning new things day after day!

What's your advice for women starting out in the tech industry?

My advice to all women starting out in tech is to believe in themselves. They may come across people who will say or believe that it is a man's job to code and engineer. I have had similar experiences as well. However, I believe that women are excellent multitaskers, and they can do anything. Most women are already outdoing themselves when managing responsibilities and striking a balance between home and work. Of course, we have to consider that there is a global gender disparity and, in particular, societal pressure in India that can be a big roadblock. I would just tell my fellow techies to not let anything stop you from pursuing your dreams. Just go conquer the world!

What has been your biggest challenge?

I initially wanted to get into coding. However, in my previous organization, I came in as a UI/UX designer because of my interest in art. I did my training and did not voice my desire to switch to coding. But soon, I realized that I should not ignore my calling, so I started learning to code independently. But it started affecting my work. One day my Team Leader spoke to me about it. I explained the issue to him, and he encouraged me to pursue designing as I was good at it. He cleared my misconception about designing not having a growth curve like frontend development. Since then, I am improving in my field and don't want to turn back!

What do you see as the biggest threat to the tech industry today?

Although technology may seem to be a driving force in these COVID times, it also poses a threat to data security. Data security, especially in a remote setup, becomes tricky. Everyone is working on their personal networks, which makes the data extremely vulnerable. Office setup seems to provide more protection as all devices are in sync on a single network. The risk at the senior management level is much higher as they deal with confidential data.

What, according to you, makes Skuad a preferred choice for both talent and companies?

I can positively say that Skuad opens up a lot of opportunities for talent to learn and grow. There is a systematic management of providing proper feedback and updates. Skuad is 100% committed to all its projects, making it an excellent choice for global companies.

What do you like to do in your free time? If you had 25 hours in a day, how would you spend that extra hour?

I like to sketch and read. Currently, I am reading a book on design called "The Design of Everyday Things" by Don Norman. I love to read Chetan Bhagat. "One Indian Girl" is my favorite novel. Besides this, I also actively take time to do courses and watch videos to increase my knowledge as a UI/UX designer. I guess my work is truly my passion.

Not many know this about me, but I love traveling and driving around my brother's bike. It is my dream to own a camera and a bike one day. Due to work restrictions in my previous organization, I couldn’t travel much. But, it is my long-time desire to ride my bike across the Ladakh valley.

If I had an extra hour, I would dedicate it to outdoor activities and play badminton or volleyball. After my second year of college, I did not get a chance to play outdoor sports. Since last month, I have been practicing yoga every day and making a conscious effort to stay healthy and fit.

Oh, and I love playing with kids. They are my perfect company!

Ok, now let's have some fun. What comes to your mind when we say the following:

Teamwork – My colleague, Rahul Saharia. My managers, Rishi Sir and Kingshook Sir
