Introduction

Algeria is a North African nation bordering the Mediterranean Sea. The country is considered the gateway between Africa and Europe. A considerable portion of the country comprises the Saharan desert; apart from the desert, a few mountains and a narrow coastal plain complete the country's territory. The nation has a mixed economic system, including various private freedoms, combined with centralized economic planning and government regulation. Hydrocarbons and public investments predominantly drive the Algerian economy. Hydrocarbons account for 19% of GDP, 98% of exports, and 60% tax revenues.

Overview of Algeria

Population: 45,968,510 people (2024)

GDP: 239.21 in billion USD (2024 estimate)

Economic Overview

Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent conditions, GDP growth in Algeria fell -6% in 2020. According to the IMF’s (International Monetary Fund’s) latest forecast for April 2021, the GDP of Algeria is expected to rise to 2.9% in 2021 and stabilize at 2.8% in 2022, subject to the post-pandemic global economic recovery.

Market Size

The market size in Algeria is not enough to accommodate all of its working-age population. As per the World Bank report, the unemployment rate was 14.5% in 2021, and the skill gap plays a vital reason in the unemployment of youth, women, and graduates. With better industrialization and proper skill training programs can address the skill gap and Algeria's unemployment issue.

A brief glimpse of industries

  • According to the national statistics office, the size of the industry represents 37.4% of GDP, employing 30.7% of the active population. The oil and gas sector of Algeria accounts for most of the federal income of the country. It sums up over 90% of the total export income of the country.
  • Apart from hydrocarbon industries, other revenue-generating manufacturing sectors in Algeria are industrial food processing, textile products, chemical products, metals, and construction materials.
  • For better industrialization, the government is looking for ways to reduce its dependence on gas for power generation by investing in solar energy.
  • The tertiary sector (service sector) contributes to nearly 46% of the annual GDP of Algeria and employs about 60% of the workforce. The nation's banking sector is dominated by public banks, which suffer from high levels of non-performing loans to state-owned enterprises.
  • To exploit the country's natural wealth, including the long Mediterranean coastline, desert landscapes of the Sahara, and cultural and historical sites of Algeria, the government is working to improve the tourism industry.
